Super - Insaans : The Beginning

By Pragyananda Mishra

Born in a small village of Smashpur, Brush Banner was just the quintessential simpleton next door. Spending his childhood among explosives, science and medicine he developed flair in the art of experimentation. The name ‘Brush’ was a result of his peculiar practice of brushing with a green paste 3 times a day (some even say this was a result of a failed attempt to impress a girl by using green oil painting!!). In the village of Smashpur, the richest man was Pogambo- who amassed massive wealth from his battery of hooligans and vandals. Pogambo was blessed with a son named Mogambo, who had a mutated laugh gene from birth which made him to utter “Mogambo khush hua” at every drop of a hat! Being school mates, Brush Banner and Mogambo were as different as fire and ice but still managed to get together well on their various journeys and expeditions through the woods, jungles and zoos. Things went on very smoothly till the 5th of November - the day was special in a way that Smashpur was celebrating its centennial Durga Puja celebration but little did the denizens knew that this day would scar them forever- especially of the two bosom friends.

The school play was a very integral feature of the RamLeela done as a part of the festivities. As with kids, ecstasy just failed to leave Brush Banner and Mogambo as it was a hard earned victory in the battle of the countless auditions and hour of rehearsals. To make matters a tad interesting the school’s cynosure, the beauty Lara Kofta was to don the clothes of Sita. Although Mogambo has tried to woo her with gifts, chocolates and myriad flowers, Lara never had a soft corner for him. She always was interested in the reticent and meticulous Brush Banner. The grapevine had that Brush Banner had given many tips to Lara about expeditions, mysteries and tomb raiding (Coming from a family of the many grave diggers and treasure hunters she had to fall for it). The entire scheme of affairs was being closely looked at by a senior named Joe Kar, loved to make people laugh- by hook or by crook. He was also behind those tens of “Please-Like-for-a-Competition” chats send across to class mates. Obviously many agreed and helped him, but Brush Banner and Lara were two of those who stood out and firmly objected to this system of forcing people to oblige. He hatched a plot to scar these two rebels for ever. His nefarious brain thought of replacing the crown of Lord Rama (the role to be played by Brush Banner) by a chemical which itches and leaves permanent marks, and for the fate of Sita (the role to be played by Lara Kofta) he thought of placing a poisonous flower which could make her temporarily insane! The school’s principal was an ardent drama enthusiast Mr. Sher Lok Homes, who was a dignitary in the village given that he was a landlord and offered condominiums in the posh area called Lok Street. He, among other things was a brute taskmaster and was seen smoking a pipe and having the assistance of Dr. What Son when it came to important affairs.

The play began among thunderous applause and cheering. Mogambo was at his vociferous best with the utterances of his catchphrase while fitting into the role of the imposing Ravana and Brush Banner carried the stature of Lord Ram in a manner which was never seen before. To complete the story, Lara Kofta was delightfully witty and at her gracious best as Sita. It was the 23rd minute when after a barrage of arrows and vociferous dialogues that Ram entered the battle with the Ravan. After some spellbinding exchanges, Joe Kar found the opportune moment to unleash his demonic ideas into practice and sprayed the chemical on Brush Banner’s crown and planted the flower in Lara Kofta’s wig. Banner, nonchalantly put on his crown for the next act and suddenly felt the influences as he scratched all over accidentally spilling a green chemical on himself in the process (Later it was found that the chemical was brought by the ever so forgetful Mr. Been) - the Smashpur residents watched with horror as Brush Banner transformed into a monster, a grotesque green form smashing furniture and screaming at the top of his voice. It was only a Lara Kofta’s touch and comforting voice which brought back the monster to a human form- Brush Banner had got an evil twin - a Howlk.

Time passed and these little friends and enemies entered manhood and settled into different roles. Lara Kofta became an avid Tomb Raider, Mogambo took help of minions and build a gang of hooligans who helped him to be the emperor of the world, Brush Banner/Howlk was a scientist during the daytime at the Smashpur academy of sciences and Mr Sher Lok Homes became one of the largest retail estate behemoths of the country. Mr Been grew to be a charming TV personality, making children roll to his comic histrionics. The world never knew of Joe Kar after that, it was said that he left Smashpur as he was interested more in meeting an unstoppable force - The Batmanav!

Lots more on the next story…..

The Renegade

Exploring avenues and pushing for richer pastures
The night walker flew to battle the Sun and the azure,
Rebel he was, he braved the caveat and shook off being demure
Enough of being a lunatic, he said, seeming perfectly sure

His mother, in the midst was heard of the plaintive whine,
He consoled, saying he will rule the day and the tall pine
Pruning his plume he ventured after shrieking a line
He rose high, turned a bone and disappeared into the vine

The sun, the sultry scenes were fought with utmost skill
The maverick he was, he thought this was his fill
Little did he know that grave threats loomed large above his bill
He perched on a tree picking up fodder or his meal

Along came a murder of crows, black and cawing
They seemed to get rid of the changeling
Our hero seemed to be flummoxed at this acerbity, this pestering
the little one was gravely swooped upon by the crows, amidst shouts and abusing

Somehow braving the odds, he dashed for a high post
The crimson all poured, resembling a gory ghost
he shouted at the heavens, remembered his mother and cried accost
Then fell the brave owl, the little renegade most :(

Forgotten Reel Spies

By Pragyananda Mishra

It has been few years since I discovered the art of gluing close to a laptop, stuffed in the tiniest of the spaces at times, plugging in the earphones, frantically searching for the subtitles and praising to the serial rippers for the wonderful releases. Ignore the ethical factor and these people are certainly the most revered ones for those who live, eat and drink celluloid. Among the myriad hues of genres, modern cinema (after 1950’s) has seen some of the best movies and the most probing climaxes in the Espionage segment. In here I intend to list my top 5 movies which have been long forgotten and are far too much underrated than they should be. I also fill the spaces with a few words of wisdom (I may not be the typical 50 something acerbic movie reviewer and definitely not the one who has seen everything but believe me I know a word or two )

Stand out performance : Robert Redford as Joe Turner
Suspense quotient : 6/10
Plot : As a low level CIA researcher “who is paid to read almost everything that has been published” this is Condor’s tale of bringing the skeletons out of the CIA’s closet after the gruesome death of his colleagues. Being voted as one of the sexiest men of the century he does what spies love to do with hostages and women.

Stand out performance : Cary Grant as Kaplan/Thornhill
Suspense quotient : 8/10
Plot : An advertising executive is on the run as he falls into a vicious trap set by a real spy working for ‘the’ agency. What follows is framing for murder, running for cover and rescuing a blond atop Mt. Rushmore. A Hitchcock masterpiece

Stand out performance : Gary Oldman as George Smiley
Suspense quotient : 6/10
Plot : A spy operation gone wrong and the lead is accused to be the mole and is terminated of his office. Years later the British Intelligence needs him again and he uses all his espionage skills to unearth the fiasco and the men who led to his ungraceful exit

Stand out performance : Edward Fox as Jackal
Suspense quotient : 9.5/10
Plot : Adaptation of Forsyth’s classic novel of the same name, the movie matches the book in every aspect and even heightens the tension and the famous “will he shoot?” query that the audience hold on to for 2 hours. Weapon smuggling, car chases, sex with a hot-single-but-mingle-stranger make the movie a feast for the eyes

Stand out performance : George Clooney as Jack/Edward
Suspense quotient : 8/10
Plot : This is a classic example of the million movies which feature an instance of ‘This is my last! No more’ cases. Being a master assassin Jack manages to camouflage very well in the streets of Italy and finds an accomplice. The last scene of the separation/craving/meeting is worth seeing.

The movies listed above are 5 in number and in no way are the best rated in IMDB but it needs a comprehensive viewing. Among the bigwigs we can always shower plaudits to the Bourne’s, The Bond’s and The Mission Impossible’s.

The Men Who Stare At Walls!

With the spate of networking and so-see-all media, the Netizens are right in the centre of a
Art by Umesh R
piñata of information overdose. Every other day we begin our days, lazily reaching to the facebook and twitter tabs and dilate our sleep deprived pupils to the tiny red balloons popping as notifications or gazing in amazement at the number of re-tweets and tweetbacks. Spam, a condensation of Spiced Ham has radically transformed its implications in the virtual world and each day I am amazed at how the vicarious appetite is satisfied by scores and dozens of heavily morphed images, plethora of links and Photoshop that would have made painter’s droop down ! The one image that created a lot of buzz these few days was an image of a Gandhi-esque person shaking a leg with a Lady; No doubt it became an instant hit with the users and rampant wordplay, sarcasm and remarks followed with shares reaching astronomical proportions! I, having seen life for over 2 and a quarter decade, am amazed at the sudden burst of rods and cones outburst that the people seem to possess. Echoing the words of Forrest Gump, “Mama said Life is a box of chocolates...you never know what you are going to get...”, I feel that people no longer believe in luck, happening and the vicissitudes of fate. What has caught attention, release it, pump it out - seems to be the order of the day.

Now moving on to the literati, an expectation of “At least they must make sense” seeps in..but to be squirted out violently a little later. A lot of Rants, XYZ Tips, Dude hain? Seem to defile the very basics of English and intend to defame and mock at the drop of a hat. Even the multitude of competitions in all the media require an essential component : the ‘LIKES’ and re-tweets. I wonder in what way does it promote or encourage customer acquisition, as a parallel I see it as a levy which was prevalent during a despotic ruler’s regime - Pay to make Hay! The freedom of speech is another tenet which our forefathers thought up but only led to killing the social equity by opening a can of worms - I won’t demean a speech, but shouldn’t you realise that the bayonet must be along with the proper fusillade. Making a hue and cry is passé, now
the taking a cue and fry seems to be the perfect rhyming fit :-)

Among other rants and ramblings I feel this change has had only 2 beneficiaries
1) The quizzers - those who know everything about nothing (or at least feign)
2) The cunning linguists - the wordy wise class :-)

Just imagine our days of yore- the Siddharth Basu’s radio histrionics or the ‘Mixed bag’ rounds of BQC - quizzing was always for the elite and erudite, people read lots, talked lots and gained lots. The corruption came with the onset of KBC and boy! That corrupted quite a few. Suddenly parents bought a lot of quiz books, children knew more about really nothing. Tell me in what world is knowing the etymological origin of ”quintessential” going to help me if I don’t even know how to spell it! So there arose the so called ‘quiznuncs’- who have managed to veil ignorance under a plethora of useless braggarts and mindless information. The forums and groups of so-see-all networks seem to be the idyllic haven - lots of free plagiarism and fake google plus winning appreciation. Every odd quizzing club has developed its business wings, only an icarus would kill their so called grey cell overdose - Just look at how many are deprived of basic education and quizzers go around, reserving hotels and vain boasting in avenues. :-(

The other people are the wordy wise, the cunning linguists who live on wordplay and sir chasm, lampooning at every possible opening. I somehow feel that these are the people who will help make a ‘name’ and at some point of time and will be proclaimed as the ‘write’ guys left in the country. I somehow seem to back the ‘words worth’ than keep lingering the elephant with ‘master debater’ skills. Of late ‘Aunty-Climax’, ‘Henopause’, ‘Maalnourished’, The Big ‘Bhaang’ theory etc have flocked quite a media space. I am a devotee of this art and would love to get sarcastic at every opportunity.

“The Karnataka Ministers suffered from Osteopornosis- a degenerate disease” was a very popular tweet and brought about a cheer to many and even a tear to the concerned!

Life has always been the topsy turvy coaster ride - things come and go and the annals of history have blamed humans to adapt and survive. In lieu of this verbiage, this acerbic satire - I end with a question.....

“ If apes evolved into humans, why are there still apes - in the form that we see them?”
The answer lies within :-)

Frooty And Nutty

By Pragyananda Mishra

Dear Fruitcake,

From being a sour grape to unleashing the grapes of wrath I have seen it all and gone plum crazy in love. Fate kicked me in the nuts, upset my apple cart and made me go bananas after I landed in banana republic. After spending my formative years there, I grew nutty and developed a cool as a cucumber disposition. I studied hard, managed to blare my Adam’s apple aloud and found a job at the big apple. There I craved more for the cakewalk with you alongside, but they fed me an apple a day to keep the doctor away and I ended up using my savings on buying lemons. But the imaginary seeds of real love can never be forgotten, I will come over to your place this weekend and I hope you will bear fruits of my loins by allowing me to bend you over the fig barrel. I agree Life is a bowl of cherries and if it’s pure cherry picking you want then be assured that my love can let you compare apples and oranges.

From Pinacola Das

Just Kidding

By Pragyananda Mishra

When I was a kid,
The honking school bus was my ultimate driving machine, The fear and loathing of Zee horror show made sure that I don’t wake up for a pee. The only time I devoured 3 chapatis was when mom served the left-over mutton curry @dinner. The ideal Sunday was cartoonscomics and cricket. The securest place (where no god-damn-ghost could enter) was sleeping between paa and mom. Subjects like dictation, craft and moral science were somehow a fearful proposition; the only thing that I bothered to wipe my hands and face with after a meal was my mom’s saree. Evening prayer was an effort to battle mosquitoes and keep singing in unison at the same time. To avoid interruption of Rangoli - I kept the toilet door open and did the needful.

Big Babol (and big fun!) cards were something more than merely precious. The only plea/excuse at exams was a loud cry. Knees and elbows seemed to be the infinitely skin rich parts of the body. The birthdays were all about gifts and “whistle blowing”. The PTA meetings always ensured that my lunch was served only when my father came back from work. A very late night sleep meant going to bed at 10:20 PM after being bored by the TV commercials during the Friday DD movie. Superheroes came in dreams and lasted for 8 hours. Bravery was
rushing 5 metres into the sea and coming back escaping the waters. Sachin winning the match
for India meant a glass of Pepsi at the next meal. Being sick meant sitting on the best chair with mom by my side serving apples and soup, brother tuning Cartoon network and papa saying “okay you won’t go to school tomorrow”. Train travel meant a ruckus as I often ended up
holding hands with the wrong parent. Clearing Contra and Mario stages meant pride among friend circles. Ass meant a beast of burden, rubber indicated an eraser and cats and pussies were recited in aplomb in rhymes...........

Dylan’s-Times they are a changing never was more true.

Idiotoms 3

By Pragyananda Mishra, who at the time of penning this, had finished hearing a Rafi-Dev Anand tune about 20 times. Picture that, Dirty :)

1. Wild goose chase – To use the loco-motor reflex, intense coordination of the cortex and the lumbar support in pursuing a gaggle of harmless waterfowls, provided that the ambience around resembles the wilderness, untamed with resplendent flora  and fauna.

2. A rolling stone gathers no moss - The controversial anthology of pasquinades, lampoons and seemingly worldly thaumaturgy would in most certitude be a failure in collection, preferably for future use a substance characterised by a gametophyte-dominant life cycle bryophyte.

3. A thing of beauty is a joy forever – An object serving the myriad hues of purposes and swashing to multitude philosophies, when compared to visually appealing pulchritude lights an eternal flame of contention, jubilation and gaiety.

4. Brevity is the soul of wit - Being breviloquent, adept with the tenets of embracing succinctness of the vocal chords in blurting out audible frequencies is the incorporeal essence of an object’s sentience, sapience.

5. Every cloud has a silver lining - Out of the innumerable liquid droplets or frozen crystals  suspended in the troposphere above the surface of a planetary body forming a massive visible mass usually encompassing the spectrum of frequencies, there exists a lustrous transition metal, bearing immense tangible worth in the form of a straight geometrical parameter bearing negligible dimensions.

Idiotoms 2

By Pragyananda Mishra, who is exasperated battling alarms, deadlines and  fighting  with the 1st  3 letters of the alphabet along with mathematical suffixes which have encroached his otherwise ,  reserved- for- the- pulchritude nocturnal ruminations ....

In here I would like to dissect some of the commonest phrases, idioms an sayings in my way. There would be a semblance of Sheldon, Weaving and some of the grandiloquent in history but believe me this will be entertaining.

1) Skeletons in the closet:
The Greek root for dried body, forming the outer bulwark of the homo sapiens is to be observed by the cones in the ocular region, and as per necessary chemo-receptors successively is sent to the brain and encountered in the present world in a hollow, wooden cubicular structure serving the purpose of preserving bodily garments

2) As you sow so shall you reap :
Your action of using lumbricals to scatter small embryonic plants wrapped in a biological sheath in mostly a positively correlated order would in with most certainty reflect upon the mature harvest that you assimilate for a pecuniary purpose..

3) All That Glitters Is Not Gold :
The myriad sundry which on reception of an ambient amount of a frequency spectrum oscillates between titillation and umbrage giving the rhodopsin of the ocular region a sense of sparkling glamour is with most certitude, the negation of being the yellowish transition metal having 79 protons in its nucleus which has often been figured on embellished feminine homo sapiens
4) Don't Count Your Chickens Until They're hatched :
It’s absolutely inadvisable to indulge in using your digits and creases doing a process of arithmetic which deals with assigning a numerical equivalent to diminutive, succulent two legged birds of the  non feathered variety up to a point in space when they have broken the worldly shackles of existence from an albumin and keratin rich casing...

5) Once in a blue moon :
Can google be wrong ?
It says this is equivalent to 1.16699016 × 10-8 hertz  J
