Apple Gets Social : A Potential Investment in Twitter Abounds

By Pradyut Hande

After conquering the electronic realms of computers, portable music players, smart phones and tablets; Silicon Valley behemoth, Apple Inc. has trained its sights on "biting" into the social media pie. At a time when communal networking is growing in popularity the world over and competition in a nascent albeit fragmented market is enhancing exponentially; venturing down strategically diverse avenues, keeping the company's core competencies in mind, is critical to maintaining a market stronghold. Having floundered in its endeavor to make a dent in the social media space thus far, Apple is now contemplating a strategic investment in Twitter to further its efforts at galvanizing its social network market presence. The impact of social media on consumerism and buyer behavior cannot be undermined in a global economy. Thus, Apple's impending foray into this domain promises to open up a plethora of opportunities at both a macro and micro level.

"Apple doesn't have to own a social network. But does Apple need to be social? Yes!", said CEO, Tim Cook recently; words that are reflective of a potential investment down this channel. An impending stake purchase in a market leader like Twitter would create far reaching consequences for both companies alike.

What's in it for Apple?

For starters, one must note that it is not as though Apple hasn't tried to make inroads into the social media market in the past. It is just that its efforts have fallen flat in the face of mounting competition from perennially proactive rivals. For instance, Apple's relationship with Facebook got off to an inauspicious start when attempts at integrating key Facebook features into its own music-oriented social network, Ping, came undone owing to mutual disagreements. Additionally, the fact that a major competitor, Microsoft, already owns a stake in Facebook; makes Apple's position in this space all the more vulnerable. Add to that the mounting pressure being exerted by an upwardly mobile Google with its own social network, Google Plus, and Apple's "social media market experiment" thus far, pales in comparison.

However, fortunately for Apple, its attempts at priming Twitter as an integral partner has spawned a more mutually rewarding relationship in the past. The company has incorporated the latest Twitter features in the robust Apple OS that runs on its computers, laptops, smart phones and tablets. Over time, the Apple - Twitter alliance has tread the path of calibrated stability. Perhaps now is the time to take the relationship to "the next level".

With over USD 117 Billion in liquid assets in its coffers, a financial investment in Twitter at this juncture in time appears to be a prudent move. It would mark a departure from its prevalent strategy of primarily buying out upcoming start ups that can be strategically integrated into its global supply chain. Furthermore, a potential deal would help Apple leverage Twitter's competencies, reach and marketing prowess to gain a valuable foothold in the social media arena. It may not bestow Apple with the market leader position it is so accustomed to, but it would definitely pave the way for bigger and better things to come. While its competitors (and allies) attempt to enter the mobile phone and tablet markets (read Google and Facebook), Apple's proactive surge in social media would serve as an effective "counter". With mergers, acquisitions, strategic investments and an expanding portfolio of competencies fueling greater possibilities; the tech market remains in the throes of perennial flux and caprice. Apple's potential move thus, is not just prudent...but also necessary.

What's in it for Twitter?

With almost 150 million monthly active users, micro blogging site, Twitter has been at the forefront of the "social networking revolution" in the last few years. It may have carved a niche for itself, but in an unpredictable market it ought to remain vigilant and receptive to change. A potential investment oriented alliance with Apple would further augment its strong financial position. Twitter has more than USD 600 million liquid assets, primarily accrued through advertisement revenue.

Furthermore, it would prop up its valuation from USD 8.5 Billion to approximately USD 10 Billion. Being closely associated with a technology giant like Apple would consolidate its market perception and position. It would also come as a much needed shot in the arm in the face of widespread conjecture surrounding the over valuation and inflated potential business projections of social media companies. In the wake of Facebook's lackluster showing on the share market, investors are liable to tread with caution.

An investment by Apple would also prop Twitter up suitably till its impending IPO a few years down the line.

Thus, a potential deal would spawn and augment a mutually beneficial relationship in an increasingly dispersed market landscape. The fact that Twitter does not plan to venture into Apple's traditional markets, lends credence to the partnership's solidity. This is unlike the situation with companies like Google and Facebook that have stepped up efforts to challenge Apple's supremacy in its familiar stronghold of the mobile phone market.

Whatever be the case, all these company directed undertakings are symptomatic of a gradually changing consumer mentality. A strong consumer focus coupled with a vigilant eye on the competitor in the rear view mirror and sound strategic sense will be the name of the game moving forward.

Write Monkey

A GREAT WRITING APP FOR YOU.

Whenever I write, I always like to start on a fresh page and in a clutter free environment. Somehow, given the multitude of thoughts crossing through my brain, I tend to lose focus and then I'm stuck traveling in reverse, trying to go back to the last thread of thought.

Microsoft Word is too bulky an app in my world. I don't need text editing mid-flow. Maybe a few bullets and all, but if you know a few keyboard shortcuts, using these will be a charm!

If you, like me suffer from the same "Lost-in-space' Syndrome, then don't be a worry-wart! ;D Check this App out, and I'm sure you'll love it!

It’s called WriteMonkey. Whenever I think of it, dancing monkeys come to mind! I'll list down the Pros and Cons of this. By the way, this post too was written on it!

Pros

  • It’s a free app, skinny weight wise.
  • The interface is great, it starts with witty quotes that make me smile all the time.
  • Just keep typing whatever comes to your mind and it won't interrupt you.
  • Neither will it ask you to continuously try to revise "fragments" nor will it highlight colloquialisms.
  • When you're done, hit Esc and you can save it as a .txt (Text) file.
  • A No frills, non-messy writing app for you.
  • It’s also portable, just put WriteMonkey (installation) on USB and use it on any Windows computer.

Cons:

  • People with limited keyboard shortcut knowledge (Read : Keyboard noobs) shall find it hard to deal with.
  • A short summary of these on the welcome page would have helped.
  • Also a few times it crashed on me! Since then I've fallen into the habit of Ctrl+S every few sentences.

However there are so many features to it and its better if you read them here

On the whole, I love it and can't write without it =)

Lets hope you like it too.

Top 6 Android Applications

By Clive Pereira

It’s extremely user-friendly, addictive, lets you have the world of communication at your fingertips, named after the yummiest deserts and its going to take over the world (well at least the world of mobiles), you guessed it; it’s Google's Android OS.  If you haven’t noticed you probably are living under a rock, the Android OS is here infecting all the phones it possibly can. The user friendly OS takes customizing to a whole new level and allows you to manage the phone just the way you want to.

Place what you want where you want. Let yourself go crazy over the market place where you can shop for whatever application you want be it useful like an anti virus or something as pointless as the moron test. The store has over 300,000 applications to choose form and eighty percent of them are all free. All you need is an internet connection and you are good to go. Find yourself in need of a document reader? Why not just download one? Bored of the commute to work? Chuck some angry birds at bloated pigs for fun. The android brings all of your business and entertainment needs to your finger tips with ease, and the fact that most of the applications are fee doesn’t hurt either.  With so many applications to select from you might find yourself in a tizzy deciding which one is worth downloading. Well we’re here to help you with our list of the 6 most essential apps from the Android Market.

Antivirus
To kick off let’s begin with an antivirus. Sadly with internet connectivity there's the added risk of catching a virus. These viruses can be as gentle as the ones that merely shuffle your documents or as brutal as the ones that shut your phone down completely. Whatever it maybe, keep in mind prevention is better than cure. What you need to do is download that antivirus application before you do anything else. There are quite a few available but my personal favourite is AVG. It’s a light program, free and gets the job done. Nothing gets by this antivirus and is a definite must have in my books.

Pixlr-o-matic
If you’re bored of the usual photographs you take on your phone, then the pixlr-o-matic application is what you need to spice them up. The application allows you to edit all the photographs you take and change them up to look like the most professional portraits ever. The application works in post production and does not allow you to add effects when clicking the picture. It’s a fun app and will definitely add a variation to your usual photos. The software also possesses effortless photo sharing to al social media as well as other devices. It’s an amusing application to toy with (time just flies by) and completely free at the android market.

Google Docs
On a more serious note you need to look into an application which will help you out with
work when on the move. Lugging around a laptop all the time is not the answer, instead all your troubles can be solved with the easy installation of Google docs. The application is versatile and lets you read all the document formats including PDF files. The application works seamlessly without any hiccups even when viewing presentations. The only problem with this free app is the fact that you cannot edit presentations, rather only view them none the less a useful app to have. For a more complete package you can always consider a paid application like Quick Office Pro or Documents to Go.

Pandora Radio
Everyone loves a good tune on the go and surely some top forty tracks can do the trick, but what if your local radio station is not playing the tunes you like. Well no worries all you need is the Pandora Radio application. Pandora is not just radio but radio tuned to your needs. In the mood for some Dennis Ferrer? All you need is to type in the name and it will take you to a station playing the song and songs just like it. Pandora Radio is a free app, its radio tuned to meet your every musical need.

Kindle
Another one on my personal favourites is the Kindle app. The Kindle has changed the way people read and has encouraged a new generations of readers to pick up a book... well actually a device. The Kindle application is no less and pushes people to turn their mobiles into their desired book. With this app you are open to reading whenever, wherever. You have at your fingertips, the choice of over a million books from the Kindle store.  Need a book mark for where you left off? Not to worry the software remembers exactly where you stopped reading so that you can continue later, even on another device. This gift to reading is absolutely free and a definite must have on every phone.

Shazam
The name itself sounds interesting and the application is no less. Words cannot express how useful this program is. There have been so many instances of me listening to a song and loving it and not being able to get the name so that I can download it. Shazam changed all that. This brilliant software can listen to a song and give you not only the name of the song and the artist, but also where you can download it, videos, concerts in your city and so much more. If you’re in the mood of sharing your favourite tunes then with the click of a button you can let your friends in on what makes you move. The full version of the application is chargeable, but worth every penny.

With that we end our list for the top six android applications (for now of course). Give them a try; you know you’ll get addicted.

What's your favorite app? Leave a comment..

Afraid Someone Will Hack Into Your Facebook?

By Shivam Ratnani

Recently a close friend of mine re-added me on Facebook. I was confused, and then she told me that her original profile had been hacked. She is a hardcore Facebook-addict and told me that she felt like someone had stolen her identity, maybe because she was tagged in loads of pictures and posts with her close friends and families. When asked what security measures she’ll take to protect this new account, she was dumbfounded. This incident made me realize that there are many more people who are at risk of getting their internet accounts, and not only Facebook accounts, hacked into just because of their lack of awareness. What can we do to protect our Facebook, twitter, and Google+ memories among others? Here I have listed a few simple tips that can help you protect your internet accounts from being compromised:

Tip 1: Set a stronger password!
Try to look beyond the option of convenience or an easy to recall password. Remember, if it’s convenient for you, it may be as convenient for a hacker. Try to avoid phone numbers or names of a companion or spouse as they are the first guesses. You’ll need to come up with a strong & unique password which includes a combination of alphabets, numbers and even alphanumeric characters (such as !@#$.... and so on). If you’re afraid you’ll forget the password, note it down on a piece of paper and keep it in your wallet or in any secured personal space.

Tip 2: Don’t give obvious answers to security questions.

While answering security questions, give such answers that only you can relate to or come up with. It may be something abstract or random, not necessarily related to the question. It’s easy to find out someone’s personal information, like a favorite book or a pet’s name or the place of one’s birth. Therefore, it is important to make sure only you yourself remember what you answered.

Tip 3: Avoid usage of the same password for every account.
It’s a common mistake for people to use the same password for multiple accounts. The security levels of various service providers may vary. If a hacker gets access to the password of a weak service provider, he can access the other accounts with higher security, and you wouldn’t be able to do anything about it as the hacker has already obtained the password.

Tip 4: Keep resetting passwords frequently.
It may be a difficult feat to come up with a strong & innovative password in the first place, but it is not a smart move to stick to it forever. It is recommended you change your password every couple of months. So wrack your brains every once in a while & come up with a different password.

Tip 5: Don’t provide 3rd party web applications details of your account.
Many people get duped by bogus applications that make larger than life promises and claims of providing services and offers, by asking the ‘lucky customers’ to provide their account information in order to avail those said offers . Your account details are for yours & yours only to keep, disclosing any detail may lead to the account being compromised in the future.

Tip 6: Don’t trust ANYONE.
If you have many people coming over, it is advisable not to save your password on your browser, just to be on the safer side. There have also been cases in Facebook recently, with people complaining that they had been personally contacted by a ‘Facebook Official’ saying that there have been many complaints against the page they own and Facebook needs to keep a close eye on the page and for that to happen one has to add that ‘official’ & ‘temporarily’ transfer ownership to him of the page to keep a check on the activities of that page. They may even show proof like being tagged ‘works at Facebook’ in the work-place column and to seal the deal, a link that opens the pages you own. By agreeing to do so, you enable the ‘Official’ to not only start spamming fans and other pages through that page, but you also lose ownership of the page permanently.

So, the things to know are: Firstly, anyone can tag ‘Facebook’ as their workplace and the link for the pages is a universal link that opens the owned/administrated pages of the person who opens that link. Keep these things in mind the next time you are ‘personally contacted by a Facebook official’.

An easier way of preventing this? Well, one just has to remember that any Facebook official does not personally contact an individual to warn them of their actions.

Following these handy tips will keep your account safe & yours forever. Super Surfing to all!
