4 Superheroes Who Aren’t So ‘Super’ After All

Disclaimer: If you are one of those people who cannot imagine the world outside the limits of Newtonian mechanics, this article is most probably not for you. You must already be having serious doubts about reading it, and I assure you that if you continue to read it, it would do nothing but shock your sense of righteousness and make you angry about how people are actually wasting their time analyzing superheroes instead of helping CERN in building a larger particle accelerator. *Sigh*

Even among people who do read comic books (P.S. – Watching a movie about the character is NOT the same as reading the comic books), there is a general consensus about not questioning comic book logic in terms of the real world. So if you fall into that category, I would like you to know the following before your rage starts a nuclear holocaust: I do not plan to do any such thing. Comic book world simply cannot be explained in terms of the real world and I totally respect that.

On the other hand, comic book logic SHOULD make some sense in the comic book itself. Unfortunately, the authors have to keep making new stuff up as they go along, and in the process they come up with unbelievably epic logical fails. Fans being fans, often let them pass unnoticed, but if you are someone more serious than a garden variety fan, you must have picked up some of the following holes:

#4 Cyclops

Anyone who has ever given a damn about the X-men is, or was, severely impressed by the character of Cyclops. There is simply no denying it. Humans are just made that way. We love guys who can throw red laser-stuff out of their eyes, and while girls are always attracted by the hair-style and the ‘cute-loser-guy’ attitude, guys seem to be drawn to a superpower that, at least on the surface, is second in awesomeness only to claws coming out of your knuckles.

It is also obvious that the character of Cyclops receives an unfair advantage from Stan Lee, given that he scored Jean Grey and the more disturbing fact that HE IS STILL ALIVE!

Cyclops’s powers might seem to be really awesome, but the simple truth is that he has too many weaknesses, the first and the foremost being that he has absolutely NO CONTROL over his optic blast, unless he has a special ruby-quartz visor on. On top of that, the power really isn’t that effective, since for him to be of any use, Cyclops need to be staring right at the target he wants to hit. In the real world, it might not matter that much, but the X-men Universe is filled with mutants who are telekinetic, can teleport, can manipulate substances from a distance, or can throw things such as balls of fire.

So consider that you are Cyclops. All it takes is someone unscrewing the visor on your eyes. Now you are a raging maniac blasting everyone in your range without control, regardless of whether it’s a friend or a foe. Unless that is, you shut your eyes and sit like a wimp, powerless in the middle of a super-powered war. Or let’s say someone sneaks up behind you. Would it really make a cosmic difference if a bolt of electricity hits your ass first, instead of your crotch? You guessed it! No.

Also, a ruby-quartz visor which contains your power? So imagine how effective Cyclops is if every major super-villain starts wearing a ruby-quartz lined costume.

#3 Professor X

Moving on, we have another one of the X-men, Professor X, who has the powers of telepathy and a semi-pornographic name.

To be honest, telepathy is not that weak a superpower, especially when you are as gifted as X is, but again, the way that the authors have limited how X can use the powers is stupid in the least. As one of the most powerful telepaths alive, Professor X can read minds, manipulate and create mental perceptions and cause temporary pain or paralysis in a person. It is very unfortunate, therefore, that he hardly ever leaves his mansion, unless he’s surrounded by a bunch of other super powered warriors, and even when he does, he hardly uses his powers in battle, because of no obvious reason.

Oh, and there is also the issue, that he is permanently limited to a wheelchair. Couple that with the fact that X cannot work his mental magic on more than one person at a time, or when the person in question is not physically present and you don’t even need a mutant to kill him. A group of well trained military assassins will do. Indeed, it seems that on a number of occasions throughout the series, X survives only because super villains such as Sabertooth and Magneto respect or pity him too much.

And, wait. Magneto! Magneto uses a special helmet that protects him from Professor X’s probing. So why doesn’t everyone in the world just wear that helmet? It definitely makes a fashion statement. With the advantage that it renders all telepaths on Earth totally useless.

#2 Aquaman

Enough with Marvel now. Let’s move on to the DC hero, Aquaman.

And how many of you consider Aquaman to be a valid superhero, anyway? He’s the worst thing that happened to the Justice League of America to date, and then some.

Let’s start with the basics. Apart from some retcon versions, Aquaman’s greatest power is his ability to communicate with all the sentient beings in the sea. That’s his power. As long as you are on land, in the sky, heck even in a ship, you are safe from Aquaman’s GREATEST power, unless you count a swarm of flying fish or an occasional octopus to be a serious threat.

Supposedly, another one of Aquaman’s powers is his ability to resist extreme amounts of pressure underwater, which translates into him resisting gunfire on land, but wait till you hear this: Aquaman needs to go back in contact with water every hour or so. Otherwise, he becomes virtually powerless or dead. This means that apart from a beach or a river bank, there is hardly any terrain on which Aquaman is suited to fight. So if a super-villain sets up shop in, say, the Sahara desert, the other members of the Justice League have to fly Aquaman over to the nearest oasis over and over again for his hourly dip.

In return, I guess Aquaman lets Bruce Wayne win all the fishing contests he takes part in.

#1 Green Lantern

Green Lantern is probably the worst known execution of a super-power I have seen in my life. Mark my words, his superpowers are awesome, but the way he uses them is totally not.

The Power Ring of Green Lantern is the single-most powerful weapon in the universe. It has the ability to bring into reality, the imagination of the wearer. As soon as you hear this you would start thinking of green light-sabers and green explosives that can wipe out an army. Hell, Green Lantern can imagine a Kryptonite factory into place and render the invincible Superman useless.

But no! The most creative Green Lantern becomes with his ring, is by making green punches that he uses to hit one opponent at a time. In real world terms, that is roughly comparable to having a loaded assault rifle beside you but choosing to throw an apple at the enemy instead. By and large, therefore, it seems as if the entire Green Lantern Corps, which would otherwise be the MOST powerful army in the Universe, is just a bunch of fools whose wildest imagination is limited to a long distance punch on the face.

Oh, and we haven’t even started on the weaknesses yet. Green Lantern’s weakness, friends and neighbors, is the color yellow. Yep, you read that right, the color yellow. THE COLOR YELLOW! In effect this means that you can finally throw Sunflowers on someone and cause them harm. Being vulnerable to yellow, means that Green Lantern’s ‘might’, is completely ineffective against everyday things, like say, a DHL courier van, Ronald the clown from McDonalds or a little kid’s painting of the sun. If necessary, Homer Simpson, or maybe Spongebob Squarepants can whup Green Lantern’s ass and send him packing. I have to ask! What were they thinking when they made this weakness? What?

3 Things That Secretly Annoy You

Annoyance is one of the first concepts that human beings figure out after birth. Interestingly though, it is hardly something we have ever given importance to. When you were a baby, a lot of significance was given to potty training even though you were bound to become a professional in the art of annoyance long before you managed any semblance of control over your sphincter. When you grew up, you noticed how no important treatise on biology or psychology seemed to give the concept of annoyance a standing above ‘what follows from common sense’. In general almost all adults are conditioned to think of annoyance as something caused by the actions of a douchebag or a snob. But if you were to give it a serious thought, which – blame my joblessness – I did, you would see that there are quite a few instances when the generally accepted view of irritation takes a walk in the park.

#3 Public displays of affection

Wait, what?

At this point, some of you might be tempted to scroll up and scan the title again. Public displays of affection? Isn’t that supposed to be the most endearing way in which you can possibly showcase your undying love to your soulmate? There was a point of time when the entire Romantic Comedy industry depended on the ‘Airport Scene’. There are at least 300 likes on every one of those PDA posts on Facebook which sound like cheese melting in all your sense organs at once.  So how does it fit into the annoyance section?

Well, very simply because there is only a very limited section of the population that fits into the ‘positively affected’ group as far as PDA goes. In point of fact if you like PDA, you fall into one of the following categories – A) You are the girl being wooed, in which case social precedent dictates you burst into paroxysms of acceptance, B) You are the guy doing it, in which case you should be expecting some serious recompense in the near future and, C) You are that girl/man-thing who finds everything right from Teddy Bears to feral children cute. As you might rightly guess, this represents a significantly small part of the whole.

For those of us who are not part of the above groups, you are either reminded of your own loneliness in the big-bad world, or of the incompetence of your own partner, resulting in annoyance.  This annoyance, more than a sense of morality, seems to be the reason behind enrolments in the moral police. If you can’t like ‘em, hate ‘em. Of course, on the internet, you have the armor of anonymity so you take the deep desires of your heart out by liking all those ‘love story’ posts.

It’s pretty easy to deny such feelings in the comments section, but you would barely rank above Hannibal Lecter on the social scale if looking at held-hands and emotional looks during a cheese-fest in the movie hall doesn’t send dung-beetles running up your spine.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that though. We all ceaselessly seek companionship in our lives and envy isn’t that great a sin until it becomes public. *Evil Wink*

#2 Snoring

Let’s face it. Snoring isn’t something you can actually protest against. The truth is that many of us believe in cutting the people who snore some slack. Because, after all, it’s not like they do it on purpose. The poor people have absolutely no control over their actions!

In our heart of hearts, though, we all know that the aforesaid is a load of crap. Snoring is a pretty offensive thing, and since we now have medically approved methods of controlling it, people really shouldn’t hide behind the ‘no control’ logic. But before we go into how anybody who has snored for more than five times in their life should be legally obliged to seek counteractive measures, let’s see why snoring has such irritating potential.

Apart from the obvious disturbance it causes in the others’ peaceful sleep, it is the very nature of snoring that is extremely counterintuitive to human beings. Think about it. It is something that a person does only when he sleeps. And in the act, he doesn’t let others sleep. There is something fundamentally wrong in that equation. Like a coup d’etat that leads to a civil war. A human being doing something while doing something that prevents others from doing the first something. Okay, that didn’t come out right. But… you get the idea, don’t you?

And on another note, why does the act of snoring have to sound so bad? Most of the sounds that the human body makes – the clap of hands, the click of fingers, the crack of knuckles – can be seen in some good way or the other. Hell, even a fart or a burp is good for light humor at times. So why does a snore have to sound like the final wail of a pig in the slaughterhouse? Every single time?

#1 Famous People and Fans

If you have ever, even accidentally, ventured into a forum which pits fans of two different teams/actors/authors/singers together, you would probably not require any justification for this entry. Fandom and the famous people who enjoy it are probably the most annoying thing on the internet today, causing episodes of rage you otherwise wouldn’t imagine. Debates on the ability of football players will magically transform into debates about their genitalia.  The music an artiste makes  takes the back seat as people try to answer questions regarding his/her sexual orientations first.

You probably can’t blame them. Fans are bound to get touchy-feely about insults made to things they like. Since the advent of anonymous commenting, it is becoming more and more common to make the attack on someone’s liking as personal as possible. People seem to be looking at it as a potent way to ensure that your points carry more weight. So saying, “Justin Beiber sux! Y’all justa bunch of faggot loving dick-freaks”, is way better than simply saying, “Justin Beiber can’t make good music.”

Again the blame is not entirely the fans’. There used to be a time when it took real eye-popping talent to make it big and have a million people like you. Today we have reality shows like Jersey Shore where you make it big, simply by being the biggest douche the universe can throw up while still upholding the laws of physics. When people like Snooki and Kim Kardashian have hundred of thousands of aficionados, it is not too difficult to annoy Joe the plumber, whose understanding of talent goes beyond a nice piece of ass. Undeserved fame is at an all-time high and because there are simply too many people shouting from the wrong side of logic, it looks as if the people talking sense are the bad guys.

To add fuel to that fire, there are deserving people who misuse their fame. Shahrukh Khan and Akshay Kumar, think that being famous gives them the license to make dick-jokes and be an asshole in general while they come up with crap that affects your digestion. Salman Khan will take a bazillion dollars to give a live performance, then come out on stage and move his hands about in a rather insulting fashion. Hundreds of thousands of people will see hundreds of thousands of people swallowing all that crap and then asking for more. By now you should be able to guess where THAT bus is headed.

The annoyance that fame is causing seems to be more viral than fame itself.

Do I sound annoyed here? Well, at least you know why. ;)

5 Status Updates Everyone Needs To Stop Liking

A very wise friend of mine once heard a very wise friend of his saying, “No one is too cool for Facebook… No one.” When he put up that huge cliché as his Facebook status, he got more than 15 ‘likes’. Now I am not very cynical by nature and that by itself is generally enough for me to disregard such occurrences as something not really worth pondering about. But blame my joblessness and the frequency of such occurrences, that this time I decided to do something about it, instead of simply scrolling down and marveling at the bazillionth Troll humor post about infinite energy.

Facebook statuses have become an important part of my life, and there are others for whom a Facebook status is life itself. Unfortunately, except the maximum number of characters, there is absolutely no specific rule regarding how one’s supposed to go about them, and things like punctuation, coherence and common sense have not yet been figured out by most. I can safely leave out innovation, since hardly anyone digs the basics of that concept in our country nowadays.

The buck doesn’t stop there. The practice of liking bullshit is even more rampant on Facebook. If you are a girl with good looks, you can pretty much put up any douchey nonsense, e.g. “OMG! OMG! OMG!... lyf’s sooooooooooooo goooooood!!!!!!!!!”, and you are sure to get around thirty likes for it. Not because your status is good, though. Mostly because that disgusting pimple-faced dude whom you reluctantly added just thought it would improve his chances. Seriously, we need to stop. In the name of decency. So think hard the next time your status update is :

#5 Clichés  and Pure Crap

We never like it when everyone keeps repeating the same stuff and tries to push it down your head forcefully. Nothing wrong with that. That’s how humans are, no big deal. But somehow everyone totally forgets it on social networking sites. Twenty thousand extra status updates cannot make the India-Pakistan match more interesting. You don’t have to tell everyone that your ‘exams suck’. They already know it. Having to read that thirty-seven times before they decide to open their textbooks is not going to improve anyone’s chances. And seriously, you think anyone is ever going to forget Rebecca Black and the death of music if we keep on talking about how she recites the days of the week in her song? NO! Please stop. You are making the internet boring.

And when there is nothing obvious to update about, we have a whole lot of nothing on the profiles of the same people. “Can’t believe I just farted in a restaurant.” “OMG!!! My sister looks so cuteeeeeee!!” It’s almost like their lives are so mundane, they need to get it out by giving a minute-by-minute account of every stupid happening. You can’t blame them, “Using a different toothpaste…. YUUUMMMM!” is probably the single most interesting thing that happened to them in a fortnight, but you don’t have to like it. Even if it is posted by a crazy hot girl or the handsomest hunk on the Universe, or even by Chuck Norris, there is simply no rule that says you have to like crap. On the other hand, even if an ugly, anti-social prick wins the Nobel Prize, please like that. That is infinitely more important than the bowel movement of your dream girl’s pet dog.

#4 Wisdom

There are some many a lot of people I know, who turn themselves into Tony Robbins, Baba Ramdev, Socrates or whoever they think endorses their brand of philosophy better. Day after day, their status updates will be a pearl of wisdom that will draw tens of likes. Why do we do that? The other day I came across this cosmically misunderstood truth, “Love not a person whom you love, but a person who loves you back”, on a friend’s Facebook wall. It had 23 likes. The number of likes was more shocking than the complete absence of logic in the statement, more so, because the 23 likes motivated this friend to continue posting great thoughts about who and how you are supposed to love for a fortnight. After that, I guess he ran out of material to copy and paste on his wall. It would seem as if these people were bestowed with a mystical force and depth of understanding that other, lesser mortals can barely fathom. However, it would seem that way only until you realized that the guy advising you about the ill-effects of booze has an album dedicated to his funniest moments when he was high.

#3 (mis)Quotes

People just love quoting on Facebook. It gives them the feeling of pride and a sense of intelligence and a lot of likes, but that should not happen. Here’s why that shouldn’t happen :
  1. Because essentially all you are doing is commending the a-hole for logging on to Wikiquote, undergoing some really ‘strenuous’ keyword search, finding what he was looking for and copying and pasting it on his wall (most of the time without crediting the actual speaker/author). Do you now see how ridiculous it sounds? It is not like the dude came up with that smart clump of statements all by himself. You are praising him for exactly nothing.

  2. Because just like wisdom, 90 percent of the quote-copiers have absolutely no respect for the application of that quote itself. They might be misquoting a person for the sake of propaganda, e.g. a friend of mine once very conveniently misquoted Werner Heisenberg, making it look like Heisenberg was respecting God in his all-pervasive form, when he was actually talking about Mathematics. They might even be douches who want to prove their own greatness or well-informed lifestyle. “Some men are born great; others have greatness thrust upon them”. Oh, really? Well you don’t seem to belong to either of the two, sunshine. Unless misunderstanding Shakespeare makes you great.

When you like a quote like that, it’s a plus for the moron’s inflated sense of self-worth.                Hitler had a highly inflated sense of self-worth. Catch my drift?

#2 Intentionally Vague

The creepiest bunch of your friends can be identified on Facebook. I don’t have a great amount of experience regarding the roots of creepiness, but here’s the general law – The creepiness of a person is directly proportional to the vagueness of his status messages. If you have read a series of increasingly vague status messages from a friend, you had better start the tiresome procedure of breaking ties with him instead of going ahead and liking the poor guy’s status.

Vague statuses irritate me even more than the bullshit statuses. “I screwed up”, “Yesterday was the saddest day of my life”, etc. Every time I see a status update of this type, there will be a zillion likes on it, and everybody would have asked the usual questions like, “What happened?” “Are you alright?” And the replies to these will either be a promise to certain specific people that they will be talked to later, or the favorite, “I don’t wanna talk abt it”.

Sad and attractive though the status might seem, it is actually more of an attention seeking stunt of the daily soap variety. If you’re looking for comfort, shouldn’t you at least tell others what exactly you mean? If you are too shy to tell the others what it was, shouldn’t you just think twice before posting the consequence of said events on a social networking site.

This person doesn’t really require your care and consolation. He/she just made you part of a social experiment. He/She is merely seeking the limelight by appearing sad.

And what does it mean when you like a status like that anyway? Did you actually LIKE the fact that somebody had the saddest day of their lives? It’s all wrong.

#1 Hidden Hate

Sometimes (thankfully not very frequently), I come across a status like, “Some people need to be taught the meaning of friendship”. This is a very dangerous type of status. It immediately makes you insecure and wonder if it was you who did something bad to the person in question. And frankly, keeping the disastrous ambiguousness of the statement aside, this is a very wimpy and cowardly method of getting back at someone. First of all, it is absolutely unnecessary to carry a fight/grudge into a social networking site. That’s similar to making extremely private decisions like, dying your pubic hair red, publicly. Secondly, if you want to be a gutsy buffoon than please keep the courage throughout. Instead of saying something like, “Some people in my class stink a lot” and making everybody sniff their armpits, you can be a mard and say, “Hey everyone, Atul Joshi stinks. He stinks so much, it’s like somebody crapped in a prison toilet and sent it through a kilometer of toxic waste before exploding it in a pig’s rectum. Somebody give him a bucket-full of water every Monday morning!”

If nothing else, it’s to the point. I might like that, not the former version. Best case scenario might include Atul Joshi actually taking a bath and sparing you the misery.

Having said all this, I must admit that at some point in the past, I would have posted at least one status per each category on my own wall. That’s not the point though. The point is, no one liked it. Now you know this article has nothing to do with intelligence. It’s just JEALOUS RAGE! ;)

4 Most Horrible Examples That People Need To Stop Giving

People have always had this nasty habit of giving examples to prove points.

“Oh, you think I am kidding? Here’s an example of me giving an example to prove that people give examples.”

Now the problem with examples is that they are tricky things. Most of the time people would listen to an example, smile smugly, and say, “Pfft! So you think an oasis proves that a desert is a lush green forest?” On the other hand, some people in Scotland will tell you that all monsters are real because, of course, the Loch Ness Monster EXISTS!

It is pretty hard to deem an example good or bad, but there are some that are just plain wrong and even Kapil Sibal should have given them a thought
before he decided to ban free speech itself.

#4 “It’s alright! Even <insert super-rich entrepreneur> dropped out of college”

You must all be familiar with this scene. It’s a college seminar hall. The speaker is an arrogant guy who takes the ‘favoring-girls-and-ridiculing-boys-makes-your-seminar-more-interesting’ system too seriously. The seminar is on the death-like boring topic of entrepreneurship. No, wait, death is way more interesting. The only people interested are the social activists in the first row nodding their heads like a drinking bird mechanism.

But suddenly, in the middle of this uninteresting and somewhat insulting presentation, there comes a slide which makes even the last row ogle. The slide always shows Bill Gates/Steve Jobs/Richard Branson/Larry Ellison, always giving their trademark smiles, and always reads something to the tune of – ‘The Billionaire who dropped out of college’.

These slides are insanely popular. In fact they have transcended the traditional power-point presentations and have descended on social media encouraging all the budding failures at engineering colleges into believing that Bill Gates loves and understands them all.

But, this example in particular, needs to be stopped because I have hardly seen it being taken in the positive sense at all. People need to get in their heads that Bill Gates dropped out of HARVARD, with an IDEA that put all the other geniuses around him to shame and with an INSANE WORK ETHIC. So, if you are dropping out of Bumfuck Institute of Technology because you couldn’t generate ideas enough to pass, and your work-ethic includes boozing, you are approximately as close to Bill Gates as Alpha Centauri is to Earth.

#3 “I read a lot of books.” -> “Oh, which ones?” -> “Um… Harry Potter…”

Disclaimer: This one is NOT for douchebags.

Not to be too hard on the Potter fans, all those morons who argue that they are total bibliophiles because they read ‘one’ of the following – Twilight, Percy Jackson, Bartimaeus, Artemis Fowl, etc. – fall into the same category.

Why, you ask? Well, because having read the Harry Potter series is not proof that you read books at all. That’s like saying you can cook because you know how to boil water. The series was everywhere, translated into more languages than you know and read by virtually every age group on Earth. It was less of a book and more of a phenomenon. Saying that you read Harry Potter doesn’t serve as proof for anything at all, except maybe, that in the entire period between 1997 and 2007, you were alive, not living under a rock, and not caught in an African civil war.

Still don’t believe me? Well, that’s why you should read the disclaimer.

#2 “I am a great engineer. Now let me prove Troll Scientist Wrong.”

Disclaimer: This one is FOR douchebags

I personally don’t feel like elaborating on this one. Virtually everyone knows and hates the person I am talking about.  But in the benefit of all those who feel their scientific awesomeness is being persecuted and can’t understand why, here’s the reason:

Troll Scientist is just that. TROLL. When he shows someone levitating over a floor full of magnets by wearing a suit made of repelling magnets, you are NOT expected to comment on the non-aerodynamic nature of the human body and explain how the drag and gravity forces overcome the magnetic forces. You are also not expected to lecture everybody about escape velocities when Troll Scientist suggests the construction of a huge slide to launch oneself into space.

There are certain subtle differences between Facebook and a conference of particle physicists in Richard Feynman’s backyard. Facebook is also used by average Joes, Commerce and Arts students, and housewives who still watch daily soaps for entertainment. When they see your glorified scientific disapproval of their daily dose of humor, they are bound to hate you.

P.S. – It DOES NOT make you look any smarter than you already are (which isn’t a lot, trust me).

#1 “Hey, <insert random epic fail of pop-culture> is AWESOME! Look at all those fans!”

And now, ladies and gentlemen, we shall raze all arguments that people who secretly support Justin Beiber make to prove that there has got be SOME talent in the guy (Still not too sure about the ‘guy’ part, though). These people argue, that if the number of hits on YouTube videos and the record sales for Baby have anything to say, there must be a LOT of people totally into Justin Beiber’s music, and since there are a lot of people  diggin’ that shit, da shit’s gotta be rad!

But the truth, friends and neighbors, is that ‘the popularity argument’, as the above paragraph is popularly known is worth exactly diddlysquat when it comes to measuring talent. Here’s why: Quick, how many of you wanted to watch The Hangover 2? How about the golden-globe winning, Academy Award nominated Hugo? Or maybe The Descendants? I can assure you the difference between those two answers cannot be calculated on your fingers.

The fact of the matter is, that we, the masses, hardly know what it takes to make a REALLY, REALLY good movie. Most of the time we satisfy ourselves with Optimus Prime ripping Megatron’s mouth open, Bradley Cooper’s incisors and Robert Pattinson’s paleness. And while there’s nothing wrong in that by itself, it is totally wrong if you use the same logic to compare the skills of Christian Bale and Daniel Radcliffe. Popularity simply doesn’t measure talent.

The same thing applies to all other categories. Music, for example. What comes to mind when I say the 70s? Led Zeppelin? Pink Floyd? Deep Purple? Well, these are the bands whose talents got recognized over decades. In the 70s, the most popular song was Sugar, Sugar by The Archies. Now try listening to that without upsetting your digestive system.
